Mother’s Day

I’m a simple girl. I don’t require much care and tending to be happy. I enjoy small moments more than big ones. In fact, the small ARE the big to me. I spent my Mother’s Day in my pajamas, on the couch for the greater part of it, reading and talking on and off with family. I am grateful for the down time, for the moments of conversation, for the sweet gifts from my children (gummy worms -favorite!- from my almost-18-year-old son, a phone call from the eldest, and a sweet card from my daughter), and for just having all these blessings in my daily life.

Being a mom and juggling career and groceries and errands and bills and regular every day life requires days such as this. Not a holiday full of gifts, but days that are relaxing, that start and end with reading good books, that have silly, tender, and wonderful moments tucked in between. Though it seems a mother never really gets to clock out, I try to at least once a week. Easier for me with older children, I know, but it helps me re-fuel and get ready for another busy week. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Never…

If I had given up when it seemed like I wasn’t going anywhere, I wouldn’t have had the joy of an Open House with a studio … with an awesome photo partner. I would have never met all the awesome people who have shown up on these pages (and those who have not). I wouldn’t love my work. I wouldn’t be as happy in my career life as I am now.

Never Give Up. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever!

Phonetography – Phoning it in

Here’s the deal: I love taking pictures. Though I have built up an arsenal of photo tools, I am often out and about without (or I’ve chosen to attempt to take the day off – ha ha ha!). Instead, I will whip out my phone and give it a go. (And yes, sometimes I am on the job delivering pizzas and I MUST stop for a moment because the scene is too much to miss.) With my Blackberry, I found the quality of photos to be kind of eh. My cheap phone before it took better pictures! But now I’ve graduated and have an iPhone, so I can’t wait to see where that takes me on this phonetography journey.

I gotta be me

Every once in a while, usually after I post a goofy picture of myself on Facebook, someone will ask “Aren’t you afraid of what clients might think of you, that you’re not very professional?”

Short answer: No.

Long answer: I gotta be me. I’m a woman full of quirks, clumsiness, silliness, humor, and more. I like to have fun. I am here to LIVE my life, not hide it away.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!”

There is only one me, and I like me just fine. And honestly, if being myself turns off a potential client, if I have to hide behind a facade of what is “allowed” and “acceptable,” I’m not interested in working with said client.

In fact, if I have to pretend to be someone I’m not in order to be in business, it’s not going to go well for me. My business – this business – is a creative business first. That comes before money. That comes before caring if I’m wearing the right shoes to a meeting. And that especially comes before I am Business Only. To me, to be creative means that I am myself and my heart is in my business. This will often mean I am silly, weepy, or overly joyful when I’m with you/a client.

I make no apologies for this.

It is because I need to be me that I am as transparent as I am, that I share my fears, my joys, my ups and downs in life (not necessarily always online, but in conversation with you). I will often say the wrong thing, or trip over a stump when taking your picture, but you will always get ME.

I make no apologies for this, either.

And that doesn’t mean I’m not a professional. It just means I’m real.

So when you’re wondering what to expect when you work with me, expect a real girl who laughs, makes jokes, isn’t afraid to make a fool of herself to bring out your natural smile, and wants nothing more than to make YOU happy. We only get one life, and I’m here to live mine!

Shall we commence with the photos? We shall!

I was TRYING to look cute and like the balloons were taking me away. But I really just crack myself up.
